How I work
Whether I am helping you to parse a peace agreement, understand the nuances of a conflict, evaluate the success of a program, or lead a participatory consultation, I consider myself your back-pocket expert. This means I strive to anticipate the next thing you'll need as well as deliver high-quality work according to our agreement. We will work together in highly dynamic environments, and you can rely on me for clear communication, a collaborative approach, and the ability to adapt rapidly to changing circumstances.
I approach in my work through the lens of political development. A political development approach is holistic, encompassing formal government institutions, informal and traditional decision-making and dispute resolution structures, civil society, and those marginalized by existing systems.
I believe a political development framework is necessary because human beings thrive best when they feel safe, when they trust their government to help them solve their problems and listen to their complaints, and when they see themselves reflected in their leaders. We are more likely to achieve these outcomes when we think of government as an ecosystem, with many possible points of entry, diverse types of expertise, and interdependent outcomes of our action. In practice, this means I will think creatively about the challenges we are working to overcome, never assume that what works in one place can be replicated to others, and always approach issues as a learner as well as an adviser.
